Our Story

Located in Historical Skagway Alaska, The Kone Kompany is a local institution. Since 1982, our family has been scooping ice cream and mixing milkshakes for locals, visitors, and many happy children. We invite you to visit our store and see why we are the sweet souvenir of the North.

It started with a dream...

Owners Duff and Karla Ray moved to Skagway, Alaska in 1979 as a young married couple with a dream to make it on their own in untamed Alaska. They tell the story of arriving by boat "with $10 to their name and a half a loaf of bread". Over the next 40+ years, Duff and Karla worked hard to build a collection of stores that serve Skagway visitors and locals alike.

Duff and Karla's 2 daughters and son-in-law help run the stores now. Their grandchildren are already helping in the backroom folding shirts and sweeping.  It truly is a family affair.
